Eric Storch, PhD, will provide an overview of BFRBs, including facts and myths about these behaviors and a presentation of effective treatment approaches. Attendees will understand the sensory, emotional, and cognitive aspects of BFRBs, and learn to identify specific trigger situations that may lead to pulling/picking behavior, as well as identify strategies to help cope with these triggers when pulling and picking urges arise.

11am-11:45am Medications for BFRBs

Tanya Murphy, MD will discuss medications for BFRBs, associated efficacy data, and answer questions of
attendees.

FOR PARENTS: A Parent Guide for Success

Josh Nadeau, Ph.D. Being a parent has many unique challenges, and being a parent of a child with trich can be overwhelming. Learn about what children and teens want their parents to know. Find out the most effective strategies to help your child and which techniques to stay away from, as well as identify when you need to take some time to yourself and use successful strategies to “recharge your own batteries.”

FOR ADULTS: Behavioral Therapy for BFRBs

Adam Lewin, PhD will present on enhancing cognitive behavioral treatment with strategies designed to regulate emotions, increase distress tolerance, and reduce impulsivity. Attendees will learn how emotion regulation
relates to pulling, how strategies for distress tolerance can have a positive impact on pulling, and ways to improve their mindfulness around pulling behavior. The presenters will provide specific strategies, as well as general information on the use of these techniques to improve therapeutic outcomes and manage lapses.

FOR TEENS ONLY: Trich & Pick Talk for Teens

Omar Rahman, Ph.D. A facilitated discussion on identifying “triggers” and strategies for coping with those
triggers can help get a handle on hair pulling and skin picking. This session is for teens 14 and older.

FOR ADULTS: Readiness for Change

Omar Rahman, PhD, Together, we’ll focus on the stages of change and will discuss the critical nature of readiness. Often times we are motivated and want to change, but we lack the readiness to do so! Ways to increase one’s level of readiness as well as acceptance with where we are will be discussed.

FOR PARENTS: Parent Roundtable

Eric Storch, PhD and Adam Lewin, PhD, will help parents hone in on specific and common difficulties that parents report during their child’s journey with BFRBs. This will include trouble-shooting around lapses, apparent
apathy toward pulling or treatment on the part of the child, and self-care. Parents will receive guidance around perspective-taking and the power of “letting go” with respect to BFRBs.

FOR TEENS ONLY: For Teens and Kids: Strategy Brainstorming for Skin Picking and Hair Pulling

Josh Nadeau, Ph.D. We’ll have an open discussion about the triggers that lead to pulling and picking, and brainstorm ideas on strategies and tools to that may help redirect and reduce these behaviors.
